Dust Bowl Ballads is an album by American folk singer Woody Guthrie. It was released by Victor Records, in 1940. All the songs on the album deal with the Dust Bowl and its effects on the country and its people. It is considered to be the first or one of the very first concept albums. It was Guthrie's first commercial recording and the most successful album of his career. Sixty years after the recordings were first released, Woody Guthrie's odes to the Dust Bowl are presented in their third different configuration. RCA Victor Records, the only major label for which Guthrie ever recorded, issued two three-disc 78 rpm albums, Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 2, in July 1940, containing a total of 11 songs. Tom Joad was spread across two sides of a 78 due to its length. Dust Bowl Ballads. Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads 1940. To favorites 1 Download album. Listen album. Country Music. Woody Guthrie. In Hard Hitting Songs for Hard-Hit People, Steinbeck wrote of Guthrie: Harsh voiced and nasal, his guitar hanging like a tire iron on a rusty rim, there is nothing sweet about Woody, and there is nothing sweet about the songs he sings.
