The musicians backing Chesnutt are flexible and ego-free, giving his lyrics appropriate settings without insisting on gratuitous solo spots and often leaving the music spare. Everything I Say builds into a vortex of distortion. With black humor, You Are Never Alone insists that all means of coping are valid, whether it be abortion, the Bible, or prescription drugs. When Athens, Ga. songwriter Vic Chesnutt was on tour in support of his album, North Star Deserter, he stopped by NPR to perform live at All Songs

Vic Chesnutt was great with just himself and a guitar. But he could also kick into high gear with a great band behind him. And the ensemble created here by Guy Picciotto was probably the best backing of Vic's career. The group continued with At the Cut which is also worth your investment. Also, there are some amazing live performances of this group together that are some of the last performances of Vic's life. Listening to these Constellation releases always make me sad knowing Vic had so little time left in this life. But they are also some of the best recordings of his career. And with the Constellation label, the pressings are top notch. Highly recommended.
