Album

Amen is the third studio album by Malian artist Salif Keita, released in 1991 by Mango Records. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums chart. Amen was produced by Joe Zawinul. Amen was Grammy nominated in the category of Best World Music Album. Keita's vocals are, as always, outstanding. On top of this, though, a slew of performers make appearances andor help out on production. Former bandmate Kante Manfila provides the primary guitar work for the album and master keyboardist Joe Zawinul both plays keyboards throughout and provides the production work. Also, balafon master Keletegui Diabate provides some outstanding work where needed. Salif Keita won international acclaim in 1987 with his masterpiece Soro, a brilliant fusion of the Malian musical tradition with modern technology. The follow-up, Ko-Yan, was disappointing since his voice seemed to have been sacrificed to insensitive production. It's therefore a pleasure to report that Amen was a great return to form, featuring highly melodic, hook-filled tracks with a sense of space, variety and danceability in which that mellifluous voice comes into its own.
