He was still working on the piece at the time of the Zhdanov decree, and in the period following the composer's denunciation it could not be performed. In the time between the work's initial completion and the first performance, the composer, sometimes with the collaboration of its dedicatee, David Oistrakh, worked on a number of revisions. The concerto was finally premiered by the Leningrad. Shostakovichs first Violin Concerto is an excellent showcase for a good soloist, with the solo violin being almost constantly engaged, and Shostakovich making no apologies for any potential fragility for the instrument over an entire symphonic orchestra. Now weve heard the music, lets watch the documentary film by Tim Meara, A Peoples Music, in which Ruth travels to Russia to find out more about the origins of the music and to discover what led Shostakovich to write these two works. Composer: Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich 25 September 1906 - 9 August 1975 Orchestra: New York Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: Dimitri Mitropoulos. Disc IDs 1. conductor: Benjamin Wallfisch. recording of: Violin Concerto no. 1 in A minor, op. piano: Alexei Grynyuk. violin: Ruth Palmer British violinist. Supported by conductor Benjamin Wallfisch and the Philharmonia Orchestra both on top form, she plays with real energy and excitement. She punches out the spiky opening double-stopped chords of the Scherzo with real bite, for example, clearly unafraid to be harsh to achieve the effect she wants. Shes also equally capable of a purer sound, and her performance of Shostakovichs Violin Sonata op 134 with pianist Alexei Grynyuk has some passages of fascinatingly white-toned inscrutability.
