The actual name of this is "MVP", though it is derived from "Michael Vescera Project", so the artist name is listed incorrectly here, not that I actually care. I'd never heard of Michael Vescera before, but after a quick google I learned that he was the lead singer of Loudness, an okay 80s metal band I know one album from (Soldiers of Fortune), and also one of Yngwie Malmsteen's bands. That also explains why this CD is packaged with a Japanese OBI and a hefty separate inside booklet of Japanese liner notes and translated lyrics. Loudness and their style of melodic 80s metal (harder than hair metal, softer than power metal or speed/thrash metal) was very popular in Japan I believe, and Malmsteen probably was too, so this guy is kind of a minor star in some world of music.
Another interesting thing about this disc is that a guitarist from Helloween is a guest lead guitarist on three tracks, and two tracks feature a true god of shred guitar as guest, Joe Stump! Stump is a sick shredder if there ever was one. So this album is pretty solid instrumentally and has references to various metal idioms, including neo-classical shred, power metal, prog metal, and glam metal.
The singing is good. Nothing to get excited about, but the guy is good and the production is excellent, with nice layered harmonies and stuff. The songwriting is good too, with an 80s metal feel, which is perhaps to be expected given Vescera's background. I caught a flavor of DIO at times. There's also a Dream Theater flavor to some of it, but more pop. Likewise for Fates Warning. The prog metal elements are minimal here, but there's a kind of "neo-prog prog metal" feeling I suppose. An expert on this genre could give much better reference points than these I'm sure. It sounds very unoriginal.
For what it's worth, the keyboardist is credited with "mellotron, OB-8, and Arp Odessy". Didn't notice the mellotron.
Anyway, it's a solid album I found reasonably enjoyable for one spin. Basically everything about it is good, but not great. A real fan of the genre might give it more of a chance and find some of the songs to be pretty catchy and warranting a higher rating. "Word to the Wise" struck me as one of the catchier numbers, and it rocks hard too.
