Only a Poor Old Man is a 32-page Disney comics story written, drawn, and lettered by Carl Barks. It was published in Four Color 386 March 1952 as the first issue of Uncle Scrooge. Scrooge McDuck had already made his debut as a supporting character in the 1947 Donald Duck story Christmas on Bear Mountain, and made several other appearances in Donald Duck stories in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories, but Poor Old Man was the first comic book story with Scrooge as the main character. Bob Roberts. That's Gratitude. Bob Roberts 1907 1982 was a British folk singer, songwriter, storyteller, bargeman, author, and journalist. He was the last captain of a British commercial vessel operating under sail, and brought to an end a centuries-old tradition. Working as a bargeman during the 1950s allowed Roberts to collect songs from bargemen and others he met along the East Anglian coast, which he added to his repertoire of his own songs. Bob Roberts, the hero of Tim Robbins' new film, is a populist candidate for the Senate in Pennsylvania. He's a self-made millionaire who sings folk songs to his audiences, songs with titles like The Times They are a-Changin' Back. For him, as for others, populism no longer means the solidarity of the working class, it means its division - race against race, worker against worker, with hate being stirred up to obscure the real enemy, the profit-takers who are raping the companies and leaving them stripped and dead.
