But interpretations is the key word here, because LaVette, a Detroit soul veteran and a contemporary of more famous peers like Aretha Franklin and Smokey Robinson, is no run-of-the-mill singer, and she takes these classic British Invasion tracks and gives them new dimension, making them in every sense and nuance her own. Thats not an easy task, since every one of these tracks is a well-known song, seemingly immutable in the original version, but. Bettye LaVette. Pop 2010. The Word. Bettye LaVette has one of the most original voices, lifting rock, along with R&B and soul to new transformative levels of emotion with a voice that is both lush, gravelly, and at times laced with Muscle Shoals attitudes that are provocative and heartfelt, owning every song she sings.

Bettye is capable of sweltering rock, and then shifting gears instantly to breathe life into a historic haunted song, just consider “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” a version that stands as a seminal moment in time. While other artists have tried this adventure, nearly all have fallen short due to the fact they’ve not backed themselves with a tight band capable of delivering with not only tasteful chords, but feeling the music with the same passion that Ms. LaVette does, reminding me how essential the band was to the lyrics written by Donal Fagen and Walter Becker, where without this resounding element, the songs would glide over much more shallow waters.

With that in mind, when taking on numbers such as “Salt Of The Earth” by The Rolling Stones, or “Nights In White Satin” by The Moody Blues, one had better be on their toes, bring something fresh to the table, something moving, something larger than life, and Bettye LaVette does that hands down … though when “It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo Star ebbed from my speakers, I was expecting a smoke machine and gospel lights to envelope my listening space, reminding me of why I loved Nina Simone’s version of “Isn’t It A Pity” by George Harrison. The album is dreamily compelling, lingeringly paced and deeply prescribed for late night listening, when there’s nothing else to distract you, when you’re free to give yourself over to the visions strung together here.

The genesis of this album goes back to 2008, when LaVette performed “Love Reign O’er Me” as part of a tribute to Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, as part of the Kennedy Center Honors tributes. And to that end, you’re treated to the live recording from this event as the final track.

It’s not enough that she reached so far back in time for these particular songs, it’s that she assembled her band, who used vintage instruments to infuse these track with an authentic warm life: Michael Bearden on a dynamic Hammond organ, Shane Fontayne holding down electric guitars, Jeff Kievit on trumpet, Aaron Heick on alto sax, Mike Davis on trombone, Andy Snitzer on tenor sax, Rob Mathes on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, the amazing Zev Katz on electric and upright bass, Charley Drayton on drums, and backup vocals being delivered by James D-Train Williams, Tabitha Fair, and Vaneese Thomas … all people you should know if you’ve been reading your liner notes over the years.
